The 2010 Earth Day Festival, themed "Green for Health," is a fun family day where ordinary people will learn more about the health of the planet and our physical health. Keynote Speaker Tom ?Smitty? Smith, Director of Public Citizen of Texas, will open the event at 9:00 a.m. Public Citizen played a critical roll in fighting the effort to build new coal fired utility plants in Texas, and Smitty will update attendees on the current status of new coal plants in Texas. The festival offers workshops, children's activities, vendors and more. Workshops offered include alternative energy, energy efficiency in older homes, healthy living, electric cars and lawn equipment, composting and rain water harvesting, and more. Children's activities include crafts from recycled materials and other activities that will promote environmental awareness. Vendors offer products that reduce our energy consumption and lower utility bills, improve our health, and more. Coordinated events include a community-wide paper-shredding event sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors, a youth essay contest sponsored by Success Center for Learning, a guided tour of the Sneed Prairie Restoration, a children's art show sponsored by Art from the Heart, a blood drive, pet adoptions, a recycled art show sponsored by the Grayson County College Art Department, and annual plant sales of the Grayson County Master Gardeners and Red River Rose Society.
