The Preston Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored two outstanding area students, presenting Good Citizen Awards to those who rose to the top of the class for their excellent essays.

The DAR Good Citizens program was created in 1934 to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. To qualify for consideration, each contestant must be a high school senior -- student and faculty nominated, pass official grade transcript consideration, possess two letters of recommendation, provide their own description of community service as a good citizen and the submit an original 550-word essay. The program is open to high school seniors, and only one student per school per year may receive the award.

The DAR chapter's Good citizen chair, Carolyn Dexheimer presented the overall winner, Bells High School, Makenzi Janay Davis, daughter of Lindel and Nancy Davis with a certificate and DAR Good Citizen lapel pins at the schools' award banquet. Her winning essay was advanced to DAR District II for competition. Erin Wornhor, the Advanced English teacher at the school expressed her thoughts about Makenzi; "She is a remarkable student with a desire to succeed which propelled her to the top of her class." Adding that Makenzi is one of the most gifted writers, thinkers and readers she has ever encountered.

S & S Consolidated High School winner was Lindsey Nicole Johnson, daughter of Lowell and Thelma Johnson.

The Good Citizen chair, Carolyn Dexheimer, and her committee Lisa Lettie, Jonnie Templeton and Rebecca Denton enlisted the following judges for 2014 and would like to thank them for their support; Horace Groff, Rena Douglass and Bobby Hancock.

The Preston Trail chapter would also like to express appreciation to Bells High School and S & S High School staff for their assistance and participation throughout the DAR Good Citizen Essay award process.

Women ages 18 and older who are interested in learning about the DAR are encouraged to attend the Preston Trail Chapter meetings. Members must prove lineage with someone who either fought in or gave support to American patriots during the American Revolution. Trained genealogist volunteers are available at no charge to assist in lineage research. For more information, call Regent Lisa Lettie 817.360.6830 or Registrar Lisa Hall 903.464.0797.
