SHERMAN, TEXAS-The instrumental ensembles of Austin College, under the direction of Dr. Ricky Duhaime, will present their annual spring concert on Monday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Wynne Chapel at Austin College. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Music Department at Austin College at 903.813.2251.

The concert's first half will be devoted to performance of the unique Coffee Cantata by J.S. Bach, with the Chamber Orchestra providing accompaniment to vocal soloists Jesse Baker, Austin College senior; Justin Duncan, Austin College visiting faculty member; and guest artist Ann Marie White, a professional colleague currently based in Chicago. The second half of the concert will consist of a variety of big band jazz in traditional and contemporary styles, as performed by the Greater Texoma Jazz Ensemble.

The Chamber Orchestra, comprised of Austin College students representing a wide diversity of academic majors and professional interests, will be joined by Austin College music faculty members Cathy Richardson and John McGinn. "In brief, Bach's Coffee Cantata relates the story of how a devoted father tries to entice his daughter to end her addiction to coffee with the threat of punishments and the promise of gifts," said Duhaime, Mildred S. Mosher Professor of Music at Austin College. "The struggle and outcome are as relevant in the 21st century as in the 18th."

The Greater Texoma Jazz Ensemble consists of students, faculty, and community members from across Northeastern Texas and Southeastern Oklahoma. Performance venues for the Jazz Ensemble this year have included Bells, Denison, and Durant, in addition to Austin College and Sherman High School. The April 21 concert will feature soloists Chris Dickson and Joe Gatlin, saxophones; Chris Gregg, trombone; Chase Samuelson, Eric Brentzel, Brianna Teal, Andrew Gregg, and John Vietta, trumpets; and Richard Burleson, drums.

Austin College, a private national liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas, has earned a reputation for excellence in academic preparation, international study, pre-professional foundations, leadership development, committed faculty, and hands-on, adventurous learning opportunities. One of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope's influential book Colleges That Change Lives, Austin College boasts a welcoming community that embraces diversity and individuality, with more than 36 percent of students representing ethnic minorities. A residential student body of 1,250 students and a faculty of more than 100 allow a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and personalized attention. The College is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and cultivates an inclusive atmosphere that supports students' faith journeys regardless of religious tradition. Founded in 1849, the College is the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original name and charter.
