The Grayson College Fine Arts Department is calling for artists, designers and seamstresses to create and show art clothing and accessories created out of trash and recycled material for the first "Trashion" show, a runway style trash fashion show that is in conjunction with the 2014 Texoma Earth Day Festival in Sherman. The trash fashion show will be held at the Sherman Municipal grounds April 26.

In addition to area artists and designers, fashions and accessories by GC Visual Arts design students will also be featured in the runway show. GC's Cosmetology students will be working as the make-up artists for the models.

"'Trashion' is a word which is used to refer to objects and garments produced from discarded, unwanted and leftover items" according to wiseGEEK.com. Trashion is considered to be a form of up cycling which repurposes things for new uses, rather than simply getting rid of unwanted objects. This word is a fusion of the words "trash" and "fashion" and is meant to imply that things made from recycled objects don't need to be lacking in style. While anyone can browse a vintage or thrift store, a 'Trashionista' might look into trashed boxes, piles of discards intended for the dump and other more unconventional sources for possible artistic inspiration.

The runway trash fashion and accessories show is open to all area artists, designers, college art students and high school art students in their junior and senior year. Work should include no less than 80 percent recyclable trash, found objects and discarded fabric material. Artists are limited to three entries. The fashions on the runway are to be appropriate for "family oriented viewing". The College reserves the right to reject any work that is deemed unsuitable for a show that is to be viewed by all ages or does not adhere to the theme of the show. Trashion artists are to provide their own models for the runway show.

To participate in or for additional information about the Trashion fashion show contact GC Art Professor Steve O. Black at blackst@grayson.edu or (903) 463-8662. Model make-up by the GC Cosmetology Department will begin at 1 p.m. on the Municipal grounds. The Trashion Runway Show begins at 2:45 p.m.
