Austin College's Center for Environmental Studies invites the public to "Stump the Chumps" on Monday, February 10, at 6:00 p.m. "Stump the Chumps" will be held at 903 Brewers (1718 S. Elm Street, Sherman TX, 75090). The forum, which will focus on climate change, will be an open conversation between local experts and the public. Appetizers will be served, and a cash bar will be available. All ages are welcome. RSVP to Trish Jennings at (903) 813-2041.

For decades the subject of climate change, commonly referred to as "global warming," has been hotly debated in the media and among politicians. However, scientists see little uncertainty that the global climate is indeed changing and most frighteningly, that such change is exacerbated by human activity. Concentrations of greenhouse gases, which are products of fossil fuel combustion, deforestation and other similar processes, are reaching record levels in the atmosphere. Polar ice is declining and glaciers are melting. Plant and animal species ranges have shifted among other deviations from the norm. So, what's all the fuss about?

Climate change implies an uncertain future for humans and all species. "Stump the Chumps" aims to break down the science behind climate change and to clear up common misconceptions. The local experts will address attendees' burning questions in a casual, enjoyable atmosphere. Questions likely to be addressed include: How can the climate be getting warmer when the upper Midwest has been so cold this year? What difference could a few degrees possibly make considering daily fluctuations in air temperature? The global climate has changed over the eons; why do scientists think the present change is due to human activity? Scientists in the 1970's thought the climate was cooling, but now they say it's warming. What will it be tomorrow?

The forum's panel of local experts will include Austin College faculty members: Dr. George Diggs - Professor of Biology; Dr. Keith Kisselle - Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, Chair of the Center for Environmental Studies; Dr. Peter Schulze - Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, Director of the Center for Environmental Studies; and Dr. Bradley Smucker - Chemistry Department Chair and Director of Thinking Green Campus Awareness. Will anyone be able to "Stump" these "Chumps?"
