AUSTIN ? Texas State Representative Larry Phillips (R-Sherman) has been selected as the Texas Classroom Teachers Association 2011-12 Friend of Education in the public official category. TCTA presents the award annually to honor a public official who has made a significant contribution to public education in Texas. Founded in 1927, TCTA is an independent, nonunion association for Texas teaching professionals and serves 50,000 members across the state.

In nominating Rep. Phillips for the award, the Whitesboro CTA described him as "a true supporter of education, demonstrated through his efforts to put common sense back into education.? The nomination specifically credited his close working relationships with local teachers and his efforts to remove or modify harmful provisions in the "deregulation" bills of the 2011 legislative session. Rep. Phillips was named a TCTA Legislative Star in 2011 because of his political courage in offering and defending what became known as "the Phillips amendment" to preserve important protections for students and teachers.
Rep. Phillips earned a bachelor of business administration degree from Baylor University in 1988 and a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1990. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1991 and is a member of the Grayson County Bar Association. He and his wife, Robin, have three children.
The Friend of Education awards have been presented since 1976. Recipients must be judged to be true friends of education, educators and students as demonstrated by their leadership, actions and support.
TCTA will honor Rep. Phillips on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, during the first business meeting of the association?s annual convention in Houston. General Robert M. Shoemaker, U.S. Army, Retired, a resident of Killeen and recipient of TCTA?s Friend of Education award in the private official category, also will be honored. Educators from across the state will participate in professional development seminars, elect TCTA leaders for statewide and district positions, and discuss current education issues.
