This coming week is National 4-H Week, and this year's theme is the "Make It Yours" program. The goal is to increase the public's understanding of the contemporary 4-H program as being relevant, useful, and fun for all youths. 4-H offers projects in Mechanical Science, Animal Science, Family and Consumer Sciences, Natural Sciences, Plant Science, Personal Growth and Development, and Communication Arts. 4-H Clubs also stress the importance of health education, life skills, career development, multi-cultural education, and community involvement.

4-H in Texas is administered through the Texas Agri-Life Extension, which is part of the Texas A&M University system. The Agri-Life Extension, which was formerly known as the Texas Co-operative Extension Service, seeks to improve the lives of people across Texas through high-quality, relevant, and community-based education.

Although exact programs vary from club to club, there are a variety of ways to be involved with 4-H: rifle and archery shooting sports; sports fishing; public speaking; livestock judging; cooking; and family and consumer sciences. Many 4-H members participate by entering into competition at local and county fairs, along with members of other youth groups, like the FFA. Youth can enter into fair competition with livestock, art work, sewing and quilting, and food projects. Prizes for the winners vary from fair to fair.

The National 4-H Week coincides with both the Grayson and Fannin County Fairs. The Fannin County Fair will be held October 8-11 at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex in Bonham. The Fannin County Fair offers a variety of events including a pageant, a junior livestock show, arts and crafts, a horse show, canning/preserving; and a gospel
music competition. The Grayson County fair begins on October 9th and
runs through the 12th at Loy Lake Park in Denison. Some of the competitions offered at the Grayson Fair are livestock; archery; a
lawnmower derby; and a pet parade. Live music and fun rides are also
part of the Grayson fair.

For more information on 4-H, please visit their website at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu . More information on both county fairs can also be found online, at www.graysoncountyfair.org and at www.fannincountyfair.com . You can contact my office by writing to P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768-2910 or
